Why One-Off Events Aren’t Enough for Sports Club Fundraising

Digital fundraising for sports clubs

At A Glance

  • One-off fundraising events generate short-term income that does not cover ongoing club expenses.
  • Repeated events increase volunteer workload and rely on continuous supporter participation, which can reduce engagement over time.
  • Event-based fundraising is limited by time, location and audience, restricting reach and scalability.
  • Swoodle introduces a membership-based model that generates recurring revenue as supporters join and renew, while helping clubs expand reach through a shareable digital platform.
  • Built-in member value and automatic funds make support easier to sustain without repeated asks.

Sports clubs often rely on raffles, BBQs, trivia nights, match-day drives and seasonal campaigns to raise additional income. These events could also be a part of your club culture, bringing members and supporters together while delivering short-term income.

They still play an important role, but expenses continue well beyond a single event. Costs such as equipment, uniforms, registrations, travel and facilities continue throughout the year. At the same time, you might face limited volunteer capacity, inconsistent fundraising results and repeated demands on supporters.

This highlights the core limitation of one-off events. While they can provide a short-term financial lift, they rarely offer the consistency needed to support ongoing operations. To support long-term growth for your sports club, you need a model that is easier to sustain across the season.

In this blog, we will look at why one-off fundraising falls short for sports clubs and how a membership-based digital fundraising platform like Swoodle can help generate more consistent financial support over time.

Why One-Off Fundraising Events Fall Short for Sports Clubs

One-off events can still support clubs, but their limitations make them difficult to rely on as the main source of funding. From short-term income and ongoing volunteer and heavy admin loads to repeated supporter demands and limited reach, these challenges can make event-based fundraising harder to sustain over time.

Here are the key challenges that make event-based fundraising difficult to sustain.

Create Short-Term Fundraising Boosts That Do Not Support Year-Round Club Costs

One-off events generate income within a limited window. A well-run fundraiser can deliver strong results, but the income arrives at one point rather than throughout the season.

Club expenses, however, continue throughout the year. Costs such as equipment, team support and day-to-day operations require ongoing funding, not occasional top-ups. Even a successful event may only ease pressure temporarily before the same financial demands return.

This creates a gap between when money comes in and when it is needed. Irregular fundraising spikes are unreliable when expenses continue year-round, making it harder to plan and maintain financial stability.

Running Events Repeatedly Creates Heavy Volunteer Pressure

Most sports club fundraisers rely heavily on volunteers to operate, with the same people often handling coaching, administration and fundraising.

Running an event requires coordination across planning, promotion, logistics, staffing and follow-up. When fundraising depends on events, this process is repeated each time your club needs funds.

This cycle places ongoing pressure on volunteers. Over time, maintaining the same level of energy becomes difficult. As the workload remains constant, it turns manageable tasks into a sustained burden.

Repeated Fundraising Requests Can Lead to Supporter Fatigue

Fundraising events often rely on the same pool of supporters. Parents, families, club members and local businesses are repeatedly asked to attend events, purchase products or donate.

While supporters remain willing to help, repeated requests can lead to lower participation over time. Engagement may decline not because of a lack of interest, but because staying involved requires repeated effort and spending.

Over time, this makes it harder to achieve the same results. You may need to put in more effort for lower returns as the approach becomes less effective.

Limits Reach Beyond the People Who Attend

Traditional fundraising events are often tied to a specific time, location and audience. Participation is usually limited to those who are available to attend or engage during that particular window.

Once the event ends, so does the momentum. The club has little opportunity to keep supporters engaged unless another event is organised. This restricts your ability to reach a wider network, including supporters who may not be able to attend in person.

As a result, fundraising efforts remain confined to immediate networks, limiting growth and scalability.

The Better Alternative: Sustainable Fundraising with Swoodle

Swoodle is the best fundraising platform in Australia that introduces a structured digital fundraising model that runs continuously rather than through isolated campaigns. This method helps clubs to fundraise with less manual effort while maintaining consistent engagement and reach over time. Moreover, the platform provides a ready-to-use digital system, built-in supporter value and recurring revenue, helping clubs move beyond one-off fundraising cycles.

  • Creates More Consistent Fundraising Revenue: Swoodle enables generating more consistent income through annual memberships rather than relying on short-term revenue from one-off events. Your supporters purchase a Swoodle membership for $49.99 per year, with 40% of the fee directed to your club. Unlike event-based fundraising, where income is generated once and stops, revenue builds as more supporters join. When memberships renew, support renews with them, creating repeat income without needing to organise a new event each time funds are needed.
  • Reduces Volunteer Workload: Swoodle replaces manual fundraising setup with a ready-made digital system. After setting up a Swoodle fundraiser, you receive a branded fundraising page, a shareable link and built-in marketing assets such as social posts, email templates and promotional graphics, removing the need to create these materials from scratch. Supporters sign up and make payments through the platform, reducing cash handling and manual tracking. This reduces coordination, follow-ups and admin, allowing volunteers to run fundraising without rebuilding the process each time.
  • Sustains Ongoing Support Through Built-In Member Value: Supporters are more likely to participate when they receive something useful in return, rather than responding to repeated one-off requests. Swoodle provides this through access to exclusive members-only offers across dining, retail, travel, entertainment, health & wellbeing and services, designed for everyday use. At the same time, 40% of the membership fee is automatically directed to a fundraiser of their choice, allowing members to contribute without needing to attend events or make separate purchases.
  • Expands Fundraising Reach Beyond Events: Swoodle replaces event-bound fundraising with a central, shareable page that remains accessible at any time. Instead of relying on attendance, supporters can join at any time by using the link. This page can be distributed via email, social media and community channels, keeping campaigns circulating. With ready-made promotional assets that support repeated sharing, fundraising is no longer limited to a single event but can reach and grow across broader networks over time. One-off events will always have a place in sports club fundraising. They help build community, create engagement and provide opportunities for members to come together. However, they are not sufficient on their own to support a club’s ongoing financial needs. Short-term income, volunteer pressure, supporter fatigue and limited reach all make it difficult to rely solely on event-based fundraising.

With Swoodle, you can generate revenue for your club as supporters join and renew, share one digital fundraising page and give members everyday value through exclusive offers. This helps your clubs move beyond repeated event cycles and build a more reliable fundraising base throughout the year and beyond.

Start fundraising with Swoodle and move beyond one-off events to a model that generates ongoing support. Contact us to get started or set up your first campaign.

FAQs

Does Swoodle only work for large sports clubs with big supporter bases?

No. Swoodle is designed to work for clubs of all sizes. Because fundraising is driven by individual memberships rather than large events, even smaller clubs can generate meaningful revenue. Growth comes from building a supporter base over time, not needing a large audience from day one.

Can Swoodle be used alongside existing fundraising events?

Yes. Swoodle does not replace traditional events but complements them. You can continue running activities like BBQs or raffles while Swoodle generates ongoing revenue in the background. This reduces reliance on running multiple events throughout the year, allowing you to diversify your fundraising efforts while still maintaining a steady flow of income.

Do supporters need to be local to join and support a club?

Supporters can join from anywhere, not just those who attend events or live nearby. This allows you to reach extended networks, such as alumni, family members and supporters, beyond their immediate community. Because participation happens through a shareable link, fundraising is no longer limited by location, helping you expand reach beyond your usual audience.
